The Gold Coast Film Festival will head south on 29 – 30 April, 2017 for a free surf-inspired open air cinema event at Kirra Hill Community and Cultural Centre.
Proudly presented by Connecting Southern Gold Coast (CSGC) and Division 14 Councillor Gail O’Neill, Saturday 29 April will see entertainment from local five-piece surf band, Old Man Friday, from 5pm before the 1966 surf classic, The Endless Summer hits the big screen at 6pm.
It will be followed on Sunday 30 April by the family friendly and always funny, Surfs Up, screened from 6pm.
Surf photography will also be on display on the Saturday showcasing photographs of local surf identities and beaches of the era, and Surf World Gold Coast will have surfboards on display for filmgoers to view, including some of the earliest boards from the 50s and 60s.
Surf World Gold Coast Chairman, Mal Sutherland, hopes the screening of The Endless Summer, digitally remastered, will be enjoyed by surfers and locals in general, both young and old. “The Coast wouldn’t be what it is without surfing,” he said. “It will be good to get a lot of the younger kids up there and see a bit of their heritage.”
Connecting Southern Gold Coast CEO, Peter Doggett, said he was thrilled to see the Gold Coast Film Festival come to the Southern Gold Coast.
“We’re pleased to partner with the Gold Coast Film Festival to bring this whole of city activation to our southern shores for the first time in 2017,” said Mr Doggett.
“It is a great opportunity for us to put our region’s iconic surf culture on show – not just through film, but with a great cultural experience involving the music and photography of the era,” he said.
Limited bean bag seating will be available for hire on both nights, however guests are encouraged to bring their own low chair or picnic rug to avoid missing out. Popcorn, ice cream and coffee vans will also provide snacks and beverages.
The Gold Coast Film Festival will take place throughout the city from 19 – 30 April, 2017. For more information, head to www.gcfilmfestival.com.
