The second annual Kirra Criterium Classic cycling event will be held on Saturday 8 October, 2016, with two new races that will bring the fun of cycling to the masses.
Commencing at 10.30am, local identities will take part in the ‘Invitational Bike Cruiser Challenge’, a two lap handicap race around the Kirra Criterium course in support of the Amy Gillet Foundation, with funds raised going directly to local initiatives to increase bicycle safety.
Already confirmed are Sara Carrigan, 2004 Olympic Cycling Gold Medalist and Ironman Caine Eckstein, along with several cycling identities and Division 14 Councillor Gail O’Neill. Spectators can purchase a sweep stakes ticket to back a rider in the race, as the local identities hit some laps around the Kirra foreshore on beach cruiser bikes wearing their best beach attire.
The little ones aged 3 to 5 will also have the opportunity to join the fun in the Bike Power Kids Challenge, a sprint race in front of spectators for the final 200 metres of the circuit. Registration for the event will be held at the Kirra Foreshore from 7.30am – 9.00 am for a 9:30am start, with all participants going home with a medal and prize thanks to Timezone Coolangatta.
Event organiser, Chris Thompson from CycleSense = Excellence, said the 2016 event will be even bigger and better with more events for all the community.
“This year we’re expanding the program and giving people of all ages the opportunity to have a go and get involved in the fun of a Criterium event,” he said. “Cycling is a unifying sport and we are thrilled to see more events that involve the young ones and encourage them to take part in a safe and positive environment.”
